Special Needs Policy

Introduction

The purpose of the document is to clarify to staff, governors and parents how the special educational needs of pupils are managed in the school curriculum.

This document has been compiled by Sue Kincaid, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and reflects current practice within the school.

The governors and staff at the school are committed to the principle of inclusion as outlined in the Revised Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice. We value all children and work together to help them recognise and develop their strengths.

Teaching and Learning Policy

Aims

We believe that education is ongoing throughout life and we contribute to this process by providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum.

We also believe that the children in our care, between the ages of 3 and 7 years, have an entitlement to a specific Foundation and Key Stage 1 curriculum, which is planned for their development and provided to meet their needs so that they can develop positive dispositions to learning.

Smoke Free Policy

Smoking is a habit learned in childhood and can be fatal to those who persist in using tobacco. Children need to receive consistent messages and require non-smoking role models in the adults who teach them, as well as a non-smoking environment in the school that houses them.

Sex Education

Although sex education as such is not taught as a subject in the curriculum, many opportunities are used informally and naturally to introduce it in relation to plants and animals as well as human families in a very general way.

Discipline

We encourage children to behave in a thoughtful and caring manner.

The school has a whole school Discipline Policy. This will involve having certain core rules, i.e. walk in the building. Each class will decide on one or two extra rules, which are relevant to those particular children. Our policy is to reward all children with an hour's free choice of activities on Thursday afternoon, unless they have lost part of the time through inappropriate behaviour. Warnings are issued by adults but if such behaviour persists yellow cards are handed out, two yellow cards in one week results in a red card which means 20 minutes loss of free choice time. We also reward the children with stickers which they enjoy 'showing off'. Children soon learn to moderate their behaviour as most are keen to please.

Every Friday we have an Assembly, which acknowledges kind actions by children during the week and celebrates achievements both within school and outside.

If you child experiences difficulties with inappropriate behaviour we will ask you to come and talk to us so that home and school can work closely together.
