Infants' School

Summer 1

Our class book this half term has been `The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch, ` by Ronda and David Armitage. We looked at the vocabulary in the book, used our inference skills to discuss how the characters were feeling at different points in the story and wrote our own version of the story (a better version!).

In numeracy Year 1 started their first steps of multiplication and division by making equal groups by grouping and seeing how many groups of a given number they could make.  It is important for the children to do this practically so that they can see the link between multiplication and division. Finally, we have ended with fraction, finding ½ and a ¼ of a shape and an amount.

In Year 2 we have concentrated on the four operations (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) to cement the strategies to use and seeing how it links with problem solving. We have also recapped on a variety of numeracy-based topics that we have covered throughout KS1 such as shape, money and fractions.

In science we researched a variety of animals and after some observational discussions we were able to distinguish how they were different / the same. The children learnt the animal group names which were mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.  In Summer 2 we will take a closer look at where a variety of animals live (habitats) and why its best they live there.

We finished off the half term celebrating the Queens Jubilee! During the week we learnt about the Queen, drew portraits of the Queen, learnt a poem off by heart and sang `God save the Queen (which we performed to our families). It was wonderful to see so many parents visiting the school to have some Jubilee fun with us.

In geography we have examined the physical and human features the environment. We used the outside area of the school to identify and touch what was human / physical features. We then made our own posters of studly detailing where the human / physical features are.
