Summer 2

Our topic for this half term has been ‘Around the World’. We have been exploring different parts of the world, including Europe, Africa and India.

Our first stop was Europe!

We enjoyed making European flags and Spanish flags on the craft table.

We built boats to travel overseas.

We used blocks to build European landmarks.

Next, we travelled all the way to Africa!

This week, we immersed ourselves in the book ‘Handa’s Surpise’. We loved learning about Safari animals and we compared them to farm animals in the UK.

We made lion masks using paper plates and dry spaghetti.

We wallowed in water with the elephants and hippopotamuses.

We made homes for Safari animals in the Small World area.

We then made our way to India!

We explored the different shapes in Rangoli patterns and drew our own henna tattoos. We learnt about traditional Indian clothing and some of us made our own Sari’s using materials.

We set up our very own fresh fruit and vegetable stall in the classroom, where we needed to use addition to find the total of two or three items. Some of us were also using subtraction to work out how much change was needed.

From India, we went straight to Japan, where we saw lots of pandas (in the Small World area).

We made Japanese wind socks by combining different materials. We also wrote using Japanese symbols.

We then travelled to the other side of the world, Australia!

We used Google Maps to see just how far that was. We were fascinated to hear about the animals from Australia. The koala bears were very popular but the snakes and spiders had mixed reviews!

Our fruit and vegetable stall turned into a ‘beach hut’ this week. We sold sun hats, suitcases and handmade postcards.

In our final two weeks of school, we got taken over by pirates! We made eye patches and hats using black card on the Making Table. We built pirate ships using crates, we made treasure maps, we went hunting for treasure outside and we walked the plank.

 .

Thankfully, we managed to escape the pirates for Sports Day and our school trip to Hatton Country World. We had a fantastic time and made our teachers really proud!
